Rutgers logo

Montclair State University and Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey have established a Combined Educational Program which will culminate in the granting of a Bachelor of Science degree from Montclair State and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Rutgers.
The Program enables highly qualified high school students to complete the required courses for Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees in a seven (7) year sequence.

The Program is composed of three (3) years of undergraduate study in the Department of Biology and Molecular Biology or the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montclair State, and four (4) years of study in the Professional phase of the Doctor of Pharmacy Program at Rutgers.  During the three years at Montclair State, the student would complete all the requirements for the two pre-professional years in the standard Doctor of Pharmacy Program, plus take additional course work in the chosen major and complete Montclair State’s General Education requirements.  After the completion of the first (professional) year at Rutgers, the student would receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Montclair State in the chosen major (Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry).

Eligibility and Admission Criteria

Qualified high school seniors who have been accepted into the Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry majors or students who are in their first or second year of college study in Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry at Montclair State may apply. There are no restrictions on state of residency, but admission is limited to citizens or permanent residents of the United States who have met the criteria for admission to Montclair State.

All applicants for admission to the Combined Degree Program must satisfy secondary school preparation in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The high school grade point average and rank-in-class, along with letters of recommendation from high school teachers, will be of primary importance in evaluating applicants' credentials. Applicants are required to submit scores of the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) Verbal and Mathematical components. The American College Test (ACT) may be substituted for the SAT.

After preliminary evaluation of applications by Department of Biology and Molecular Biology or the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montclair State, the respective Department Chairperson or his/her designee will recommend to the Joint Program Committee the applicants to be invited for an interview at Rutgers. The initial interview at Rutgers will be conducted by a member(s) of Rutgers Admissions Committee. The Joint Program Committee will compile all interviewers' comments and make the final selection of Students to be admitted to the Combined Degree Program.

Applicants not invited for an interview, or not selected for admission to the Combined Degree Program after the interview, shall be notified of the decision as early as possible and shall be considered for regular admission to Montclair State, if they are not already enrolled.

Financial aid shall be awarded to students in the Program by the Montclair State Financial Aid Office on the same basis as financial aid awards made to other students at Montclair State, and by the Financial Aid Office of Rutgers on the same basis as awards made to other Rutgers students.

Program Requirements

Students are required to follow the prescribed Combined Degree Program curriculum (see attachments) and are expected to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B) in all course work and a minimum grade of B in each of the science and mathematics courses required in the Rutgers Pre-Professional curriculum (General Biology I & II, General Chemistry 1 & II, Organic Chemistry I & II, Physics I, Calculus I, and Statistics I).

Summer enrichment in coursework or research in biomedical problems is recommended. Summer externships in study or research at Montclair State or Rutgers will be made available each year depending on availability of funds.  Summer or part-time employment in a retail pharmacy setting is also recommended.

Prior to matriculation at Rutgers, students must have completed the specialized science coursework required for their major, the basic science coursework of the Rutgers Pre-Professional curriculum (see above), and their General Education requirements.  Transfer credit for the courses completed during the first (Professional) year at Rutgers will be applied towards the Montclair State baccalaureate.

To ensure that all baccalaureate degree requirements are satisfied, any recommendations concerning a change in a student's Major Program must have the approval of the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Montclair State.

Tuition

Tuition for the first three years of study at Montclair State, including summer courses, if any, shall be the same tuition as charged to all regular Montclair State Students. Tuition during the four years of study at Rutgers will be the same as the tuition charged to students enrolled in the Professional Pharmacy curriculum at Rutgers.
